The European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery
Two clinicians from Merrion Fertility Clinic completed the European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery workshop 2011 in Leuven, Belgium from October 12th–Oct 14th 2011. The workshop hosted a 3 day course on modern hysteroscopy which highlighted the remarkable progression of hysteroscopic techniques and instruments.
Hysteroscopy is a procedure that involves insertion of a narrow telescope-like instrument through the vagina and cervix into the cavity of the uterus. The uterine cavity is then distended with fluid and visualized. This procedure allows us to see if there are any uterine cavity defects such as fibroids, endometrial polyps or congenital uterine defects.
Diagnostic hysteroscopy may be done as an outpatient procedure. Operative hysteroscopy is less invasive than other comparable procedures minimising cost and recovery time for the patient.
